CONSULTATION

Welcome to the consultation page for the proposed repowering of the wind turbine at Brew Farm, St Levan, Penzance, TR19 6NA

A Message from the Farm

We’ve proudly farmed at Brew Farm for over one hundred years.  It's always been a place of hard work, care for the land, and a quiet commitment to doing things the right way.

Like many small farms, we now face a growing number of challenges - rising costs, unpredictable weather, and energy prices that can swing wildly. We've worked hard to adapt where we can and future-proof the farm for the next generation. In 2012, we installed a wind turbine to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels. A few years later, we added solar panels to our farm buildings, strengthening our commitment to clean, on-site energy. Together, these systems help lower our carbon footprint, manage electricity costs, and keep the farm running more sustainably.

We’re proud of the progress we’ve made — but it’s time for the next step.

We’re now looking to replace the ageing turbine with a modern, more efficient model that can keep pace with the farm’s needs and ensure energy security for years to come.

Thanks for taking the time to learn more about what we’re planning. We want to be open about the process and make sure neighbours have the chance to ask questions and share any thoughts.

WHY REPOWER?

Brew Farm is a family-run farm with a high electricity demand. The original turbine was installed to reduce the farm’s reliance on fossil fuels and help manage energy costs.

After more than a decade in service, the turbine has become increasingly unreliable. The original manufacturer is no longer in business, making repairs difficult and support limited. Breakdowns are more frequent, and the downtime leaves the farm vulnerable to costly energy disruptions,  something we simply can’t afford.

We’re now proposing to replace the existing turbine with a modern, more efficient model. This isn’t about expansion; we’re not adding more turbines or changing the character of the site. It’s a straightforward, like-for-like upgrade. The new turbine will be modern and efficient, offering quieter operation, 24/7 performance monitoring, and a 20-year warranty, along with comprehensive support and servicing.

Together, this means fewer breakdowns, greater energy security, and a cleaner, more sustainable future for the farm.

This isn’t just about keeping costs down, it’s about doing our part for the environment and ensuring the farm can thrive for future generations.

WHATS CHANGING?

The new turbine will look very similar to the existing one, with just a slight increase in height and a small change in location to optimise performance. The changes are modest, but the benefits are significant - better reliability, more energy, and lower maintenance demands.

Impact on Nearby Properties

We understand how important it is that this proposal respects those living nearby. From the outset, protecting residential amenity has been one of our top priorities.

The new turbine has been carefully positioned to avoid issues like noise or shadow flicker. A detailed, desk-based noise assessment has been carried out to make sure the turbines comply with strict industry standards and, just as importantly, give neighbours peace of mind.

We’ve considered these factors from the beginning to make sure the project fits well with the local area and doesn’t affect day-to-day life.
