Determining the heights at points along say a pipeline is a simple matter of multiplying the distance by the gradient. Parabolic and Cubic curves follow slightly more complex rules but these are more often used in the construction of highways and railways. A Cubic interpolation is regularly used in changing the crossfall of a road from one side to the other to maintain a smooth flow whilst a parabola best suits the longitudinal axis for a vehicle to follow.

Every schoolboy will know how to solve a right angled triangle but sometimes we forget as we get older as my Father acknowledged when he’d tell me to go out and get a job while I still know everything

Anyone involved in construction will at some time have to deal with simple shapes built up of triangles and curves.
